What an Auto Diagnostic Can Tell You About a Check Engine Light

When your check engine light comes on, your vehicle computer has stored a trouble code. Reading that code is the start of the process, not the end of it.

What a code actually means

A code identifies a circuit or a system that reported readings outside the expected range. It does not name the broken part. The same code can be caused by a failed sensor, a wiring problem, a vacuum leak or a mechanical issue upstream.

Why testing matters

Replacing the part named in a code without testing is how people end up buying two or three parts to fix one problem. A proper diagnostic verifies the cause before anyone buys anything.

Solid light versus flashing light

A steady light means get it checked soon. A flashing light usually indicates a misfire that can damage the catalytic converter, so reduce load and get in quickly.
