New vs. Used Tires: What South LA Drivers Should Know

Drivers come into the shop every week asking the same question: should I buy new tires or used tires? The honest answer is that it depends on the vehicle, the condition of the other tires and how long you plan to keep the car.

When new tires make sense

New tires give you full tread depth and the longest service life, so the cost per mile is usually lower even though the price up front is higher. If you drive long daily miles, carry passengers, or plan to keep the car for years, new is generally the better value.

When used tires make sense

A good used tire can be the right call when you need a safe replacement today, when you are matching one tire to a set that still has life, or when the vehicle itself is near the end of its service life. The key word is good: tread depth, age, sidewall condition and any previous repairs all matter.

What to check before buying used

Look at remaining tread depth, check the sidewall for cracking or bulges, and ask about the tire age. A used tire should never have damage in the shoulder or sidewall.

Never mix badly worn with new on the same axle

Tires on the same axle should be close in tread depth. A large difference affects braking and handling, especially in the rain.
